Having been in business for over 60 years, we’ve framed virtually everything there is to frame. Perhaps the most nuanced type of framing we do on a routine basis is fine art framing. The choices you make when framing fine art can truly make or break a piece aesthetically and can play a large role in its preservation. Here are some tips to ensure your fine art is getting the frame it deserves!
Selecting Glass
Glass is invisible, but it’s still one of the most crucial choices you’ll make when framing your fine art. Your three options will most likely be UV-blocking glass, regular glass and non-glare glass. As you might expect, UV blocking glass and non-glare glass add a little to the bottom line, but there are definitely times where these upgrades are worth it. Will your art be displayed in a room that gets a lot of direct sunlight? If so, choosing UV-blocking glass is a must. Otherwise, your treasured pieces will surely start to fade over time. If glare is a concern, you’ll want to consider non-glare glass. This museum-tier glass is quite impressive in that you have to get incredibly close to the piece to be able to tell that glass is covering it at all. But, if glare and sun fading aren’t a concern, traditional glass will be a perfect choice!
The Mat Matters!
If you have a treasured piece of art, odds are it will look even more fantastic with a mat surrounding it. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when selecting a mat for a fine art piece. First, remember that the mat’s sole purpose is to draw more attention to the piece itself. Let the art do the talking. With that in mind, white or off-white mats are typically the best choice for fine art. You should also make sure your framer uses an acid-free mat to avoid degrading your piece over time.
Choosing the Frame
When it comes to choosing the frame molding itself, you’ll have a vast array of options. Sometimes it’s easiest to head right to a frame shop to see all the choices firsthand. At that point, you can directly see how each selection will compliment your piece. As a general rule, you can’t go wrong with selecting a white or black frame for virtually any piece. If you want to branch out from there, choosing a frame color and design that compliments the piece should be your goal. Again, the goal is to unify the art piece and the frame, not to draw attention away from the piece itself with a clashing frame.
